HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The veto of Bill 185 was expected and while the governor said her life isn’t any easier, a local doctor is adamant that senators need to override her decision. Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, in big letters, wrote “VETO” on the signature page of the certification of Bill 185’s passage in the Legislature.

The question of where to build a new public hospital is back in the Legislature’s court, with the governor vetoing Sen. Chris Barnett’s Bill 185-37, which seeks to place it at Ypao Point in Tamuning. Unless the governor’s pick for a hospital site changes, it will be political maneuvering among senators that decides the stalemate.

Proponents of the Ypao Point site for a new Guam hospital will need to sway at least two senators to switch sides and vote to override the governor's veto of Bill 185-35. Otherwise, the Tamuning option might be off the table.

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The governor delivered her annual State of the Island address Tuesday night, speaking on matters involving a new public hospital and medical campus, a need to reconsider automatic procurement stays and public safety matters, but not everyone agrees with her perspective on these issues.

As expected, the Governor late yesterday vetoed Senator Chris Barnett's bill that requires the new hospital be built at Ypao Point. In her message, Leon Guerrero said problems at that site are well-documented.

The governor delivered her annual State of the Island address Tuesday night, speaking on matters involving a new public hospital and medical campus, a need to reconsider automatic procurement stays and public safety matters, but not everyone agrees with her perspective on these issues.

... Leon Guerrero called for discussion and hopefully some agreement on the construction of a new medical center, the site of which has proven controversial. The governor, in her state of the island address, said there needs to be a space that “can house a Medical Center and accommodate the growth that will happen - and in fact, is already happening - on our island.”

The governor followed through with her promise waiting until the eleventh hour to take action and veto Bill 185. The measure, introduced by Sen. Chris Barnett, would have mandated a new hospital be built at Ypao Point in Tamuning.
